Croatia celebrates Statehood Day on Monday, marking 27 years since its declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on June 25, 1991.
On June 25, 1991, the Croatian parliament formally proclaimed independence from the former Yugoslavia.
The implementation of the decision, based on a referendum in which over 93 percent voters signed in favour of independence, was postponed by three months with the Brijuni Agreement, signed by Croatia, Yugoslavia, and Slovenia, which proclaimed independence on the same day, in order to further negotiations between the two countries and the federation. Croatia finally cut ties with Yugoslavia on October 8, 1991.
To mark the occasion, Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, and Speaker of the Parliament Gordan Jandrokovic will place a wreath at the Altar of the Homeland near the Medvedgrad fort near Zagreb. The Altar is dedicated to soldiers killed in the 1991-1995 War.
