FIFA has fined the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) 13,000 Swiss francs (€11,300) over several incidents involving Croatian supporters during the Croatia-Argentina World Cup group stage game played in Nizhny Novgorod on Thursday.
The fines were due to Croatian supporters taking part in a physical altercation, and for hurling of objects onto the pitch from sections containing Croatian fans. The HNS was also issued with a warning, meaning that any new incidents would certainly result in a larger fine.
Croatia has secured a spot in the knockout phase of the tournament, having beaten Nigeria and Argentina in their first two group matches. They will play Iceland on Tuesday in Rostov in their last group game, after which they are likely to face either France or Denmark in the round of 16.
FIFA had earlier fined the Argentine Football Association €90,000 over the unsportsmanlike behaviour of Argentina supporters during the game with Croatia. They reportedly threw fireworks, chanted homophobic slogans, and assaulted a group of Croatian supporters at the stadium.
Swiss players of Kosovar origin Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri were also fined 10,000 Swiss francs (€8,700) for flashing the Albanian two-headed eagle symbol while celebrating goals against Serbia in a game played on Friday in Kaliningrad. Switzerland captain Stefan Lichtsteiner was fined 5,000 francs (€4,300) for the same reason.
Serbian Football Association (FSS) was also fined 54,000 francs (€46,800) for inappropriate banners displayed by their supporters, with head of association, Slavisa Kokeza, and Serbia manager, Mladen Krstajic, getting a 5,000 francs fine each for commenting on referee decisions.
