Football's global governing body FIFA has fined the Croatian Football Federation 70,000 Swiss francs (€60,200) for violating marketing rules during the World Cup round of 16 match against Denmark last week.
Croatia was fined for displaying unauthorised beverage products during the match. FIFA has granted exclusive rights to only one company whose products can be displayed at the tournament.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee also issued a warning to Croatia’s first-choice goalkeeper Danijel Subasic over sporting a t-shirt bearing the picture of his tragically deceased team-mate Hrvoje Custic which he wore under his jersey.
Subasic had played with Custic early in his career at NK Zadar football club, when Custic was fatally injured mid-game in March 2008 in a collision with a concrete wall surrounding the club’s football pitch. A member of AS Monaco since 2012, Subasic traditionally wears a t-shirt of his teammate in important matches, and often dedicates his victories to him.
FIFA said that this violates outfitting rules, which ban the displays of personal messages.
This is the second fine imposed on Croatia at the World Cup in Russia. The Croatian Football Federation was previously fined 13,000 Swiss francs (€11,200) because of fans’ behaviour during the match against Argentina, after they were involved in a fistfight in the stands, and also for throwing objects onto the pitch.
