Every day during summer months, at noon sharp, the Roman guards in the Emperor Diocletian’s Palace of Split perform changing the guard ceremony on the Palace peristyle in the old part of Split, as part of a decade—long tourist project.

This theatrical spectacle was first organised in 2007 by the city’s tourism board, and has since become a major tourist attraction on the Dalmatian coast, taking place during summer until September 30, the official end of the summer season.

The guards stand at the entrance to the Palace’s subterranean halls, near the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, every day from 8 am to 8 pm.

Every day, at 12 pm, the Emperor Diocletian, accompanied by his wife Prisca and their Praetorian Guard, greets the tourists and citizens of Split, and holds a short speech in Latin and English inviting everyone to visit his home, the Diocletian’s Palace.

The palace, built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the fourth century AD, is the world’s most complete Roman palace structure and one of the most famous architectural features on the Croatian Adriatic coast.

The historic city of Split built around the palace has been included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage register.
