The Croatian Supreme Court accepted Croatian footballer Luka Modric’s defence attorneys’ request to move his trial from the eastern city of Osijek to the capital of Zagreb, Telegram reported on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court reached its decision a month ago, and Croatian news portal Telegram received confirmation today.

The Croatian midfielder and star of Real Madrid, recently awarded the golden ball for best player of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, is charged with perjury after he gave contradicting statements in his testimony during the trial against the former Dinamo Zagreb boss Zdravko Mamic, as well as in a deposition to investigators.

The conflicting statements refer to the exact date he signed contract annexes with Dinamo, as these regulated the way transfer fees would be shared between Modric and the club.

In his first testimony, during the investigation, Modric said that the agreement on how to share the fees between himself and Dinamo was reached after he had transferred to Tottenham, but during the trial, he testified that he did not recall the exact details, but that the agreement happened earlier than he had previously stated.

Zdravko Mamic was sentenced, based on Modric’s first testimony, in June this year to 6 and a half years in prison for tax evasion and syphoning €15.7 million from the club.

The charges against Modric were filed in March.
