About 40 forged artworks purportedly made by renowned Croatian and foreign artists will be on display at the Duke's Palace in the Adriatic city of Zadar until the end of August.

The exhibition, titled The Beauty of False Splendour, is organised by the Interior Ministry, and the National Museum in Zadar, will be opened on Tuesday, July 31. The exhibition will feature mostly oils on canvas and several sculptures.

On display will be forged works by famous Croatian painters, including Edo Murtic, Vasko Lipovac, Miljenko Stancic, Boris Bucan and Ivan Rabuzin, as well as sculptures by Dusan Dzamonja and paintings by Salvador Dali and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

The forgeries were loaned by the Police Museum collection, which owns included about 70 counterfeit works of art seized by the police.

“Systematic collecting of this material began in 2009 when the Police Museum, acting through the Criminal Investigation Department, arranged with courts that after the completion of court proceedings forgeries would no longer be destroyed but handed over to the Museum,” the ministry said.
