Iron and iron-works will take centre stage at this year's Renaissance Festival, which will be held on August 23-26 in the northern Croatian town of Koprivnica, the local tourist board representatives said in a news conference on Monday.
For that purpose, iron ore from the mine in the town of Prijedor in the neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina was secured for smelting during the three days of the Festival. Four furnaces will be built, said Ivan Valent, an archaeologist at the Koprivnica Museum.
“One of them will be a prehistoric type, and the other three will be mediaeval types,” he said, adding that similar furnaces have been found in archaeological digs in northwest Croatia.
This tourist-historical and educational event is the greatest spectacle of live images from the past in this part of Europe.
Visitors will not only enjoy the staged scenes of medieval life, chivalry, music, dance, but will also be able to taste medieval dishes prepared on the spot according to original recipes and served in a way common half a millennium ago.
As many as 1,000 participants from 15 countries around Europe will take part in the 13th edition of the festival, with up to 10,000 visitors expected to attend.
The price of admission is 5-15 kuna (€0.50-€2).
