Addressing the annual general assembly of the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN) on Wednesday, European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs, and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos called on journalists to objectively and evenly report on migrants, as they directly impact public opinion.
We are living in a time where the media have more and more power, which they have to be aware of, Avramopoulos said at the assembly, held at Sounion, near Athens, Greece.
The refugee crisis is over, he said, but added that Europe still had a lot of work to do.
He said that the cooperation between countries and cultures is important, adding that relations among Mediterranean countries are of exceptional importance.
Avramopoulos said he regretted migrant lives lost, and that he hoped such tragedies would not be repeated.
The door of Europe is open, he said, but called on migrants coming to Europe to honour European law.
