The southern Croatian island of Vis was shorlisted along with 11 other locations for the European Film Location Award, created by the European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN) in collaboration with Cineuropa.

The island of Vis is best known as the location where the recent blockbuster “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” was filmed in September 2017, although in the film the Mediterranean scenery and scenic vistas of the southern Adriatic were used as a stand in for the fictional island of Kalokairi in Greece.

The award, inaugurated last year, allows some 90 film commissions from 30 countries which are member of the EUFCN to nominate a film location used for a film or a TV series shot between January and December 2017. In addition, the movies and TV series competing for the award must have had international cinema distribution.

Last year, the winner was the city of Goerlitz in eastern Germany, which thanks to its preserved architecture in styles from Art Nouveau to Art Deco and Gothic was used as to shoot or a number of major international productions over the years, including Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds” and Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” which used a former department store for interior scenes at the fictional hotel.

This year’s frontrunners for the award include the Michaelerplatz square in Vienna as seen in the blockbuster “Red Sparrow” starring Jennifer Lawrence, and the Preikestolen cliff in Norway seen in “Mission Impossible: Fallout” starring Tom Cruise.

Other shortlisted locations include the Tabernas Desert in Almeria, Spain; Innsbruck Old Town in Austria; Frankfurt, Germany; Corfu Island in Greece; Lake Carezza in Italy; Fort St. Elmo – National War Museum in Valleta, Malta; Valle dei Calanchi, Viterbo in Italy; Hotel Metropole in Brussels; and the Teide National Park in Spain.

On November 6, the voting will open to public at www.cineuropa.com, open until November 30.
