Hungary wants to increase the number of regulated crossings on its border with Croatia, as well as improve road connections between the two countries, said head of Hungarian Foreign Ministry's department for cross-border economic cooperation, Peter Kiss-Parciu, at a news conference in Zalakaros in western Hungary on Wednesday.

Croatia and Hungary share a 355-kilometre land border served by only seven road crossings.

Hungarian government wants to increase the number of crossings, as well as road connections between Croatia and Hungary, with their two countries discussing ways to do this "as a high level," Kiss-Parciu said, according to the Croatian news agency Hina.

Among large projects in the border area, he mentioned mine clearance in the eastern Croatian Baranja region, supported by the European Union with a €3 million grant, as well as the allocation of €10 million to Hungarian and Croatian small and medium enterprises.

Marton Szucs, who heads the joint secretariat overseeing Hungarian-Croatian cooperation programmes, said that in the 2014-2020 funding period, companies from the two countries can bid for a total of €60.8 million in funding.

He said they were planning to invite bids for another €20 million for tourism and culture and education projects, as well as projects related to environmental protection, in January.
