Croatia's unemployment rate remains below euro zone average in January 2018

The EU28 seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in January 2019, down from 6.6 percent in December 2018 and 7.2 percent in January 2018, dropping to the lowest rate since January 2000, when Eurostat started tracking monthly unemployment data.

Meanwhile, the euro zone seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 7.8 percent in January 2019, unchanged from December 2018, and down from 8.6 percent on the year. This is the lowest rate recorded in the euro zone since October 2008.

Eurostat estimated that some 16.2 million people in the EU28, of whom some 12.8 million in the euro zone, were unemployed in January 2019. This is a decrease of 56,000 in the EU and 23,000 in the euro area compared to December 2018.

Compared with January 2018, unemployment fell by 1.5 million in the EU28 and by 1.2 million in the euro area.

The unemployment rate in Croatia in January this year was 7.6 percent, 0.1 percent down on the month. There were 136,000 people out work in Croatia in January, which is 2,000 fewer than in December and a decrease of 35,000 on the year.

Youth unemployment

In January 2019, the unemployment rate of young persons (under 25) was 14.9 percent on the month in the EU28.
The youth unemployment rate in the euro zone remained at 16.5, unchanged from December 2018.

In January 2019, 3.3 million young persons were unemployed in the EU28, of whom 2.3 million were in the euro zone.

Compared with January 2018, youth unemployment decreased by 184,000 in the EU28 and by 141,000 in the euro zone. Croatia does not keep monthly data on youth unemployment.
