Zagreb Airport was recognised as one of Europe's best airports in its size category in 2018, the global trade organisation Airports Council International (ACI) said on Wednesday, based on an airport quality survey polling air travellers around the world.

For 2018, Zagreb airport was grouped into the 2-5 million category, where it shared one of four ASQ Awards given to European airports, along with UK’s London City Airport and Southampton Airport, and Tallinn Airport in Estonia.

This is Zagreb Airport’s second AQS Award to date, having won the prestigious Best Improved Airport in Europe title in 2017. This year, the title went to Norway’s Bergen Airport.

The survey, introduced in 2006, is administered at 390 airports in 90 countries around the world, and involves polling some 650,000 passengers every year before they board their flights. The results are touted by the AIC as the most reliable measure of passenger satisfaction.

Airports’ scores are then ranked for the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) excellence awards, which are handed out in six size categories, ordered by volume of passenger traffic handled by a given airport, and announced early next year.

In the lowest traffic category, of under two million passengers per year, four Spanish airports (Almeria, Gerona, Melilla, Zaragoza) and Skopje Airport, serving the capital of North Macedonia, shared the 2018 award. In the highest traffic category, for airports serving more than 40 million passengers, last year’s award was shared by Rome’s Fiumicino and Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airports.

Zagreb Airport served a total of 3.3 million passengers in 2018, a 7.7 percent increase from the year before, the company reported last month. It also handled 14,000 tonnes of cargo in the same period, or 16.7 percent up year-on-year.

This made it the busiest passenger airport in Croatia, followed by coastal airport hubs in Split and Dubrovnik which had recorded 3.1 and 2.5 million passengers in 2018 respectively.
