Pasjaca beach in the Konavle region near the southern Dalmatian city of Dubrovnik was named the best beach in Europe in 2019 by the European Best Destinations travel portal, taking the top spot among destinations such as those in Spain, Greece, and France.
Connecting tourism offices from all over the continent, the Brussels-based European Best Destinations is an organisation that aims to promote culture and tourism in Europe. Hundreds of thousands of visitors and travellers vote every year in the organisation’s online competitions to choose the best destinations in Europe.
Pasjaca beach is located at the foot of a cliff, some 15-minute drive from the town of Cavtat.
“In 1955, a tunnel was created from the fields upstream (often flooded) to the sea. The remaining rocks were used to build the roads or were left on the seaside. In a few years the waves transformed these rocks into pebbles then into sand. Pasjaca beach was born. After a few years the sea took away all the sand and the locals carried new rocks that turned into pebbles and sand again. They will do that again and again to preserve their little paradise. "Pasjaca beach", the most beautiful beach in Europe, is the result of both man and nature’s work,” the portal wrote, tportal reported on Monday.
Second place went to the Nerja beach in the Spain’s region of Andalusia, while another Croatian beach, the Nugal beach in the southern Makarska Riviera, was voted third most beautiful in Europe. This beach, popular among naturists because of its secluded location (reaching the beach requires a 30-minute walk through the lush Osejava Park), which provides privacy and peace.
