At least 20 people were arrested in the northwestern Bosnian town of Velika Kladusa on Wednesday after a massive brawl in the local migrant reception centre in which casualties were reported, including three injured police officers, Una-Sana Canton authorities and police said.

According to local media, at least 100 migrants were involved in the scuffle.

The centre’s security guards could not bring the rioters under control and had to call in police but the rioters also attacked police, throwing stones and bottles at them and hitting them with metal bars.

Additional police forces had to be called in and after their intervention, the violence was stopped in the early morning hours.

“A larger number of migrants were injured as were three police officers and a police car was damaged,” police spokesman Ale Siljdedic said.

Members of the office for aliens were also called in and they decided that six of the 20 arrested migrants should be isolated and deported.

Siljdedic said that the situation at the centre was still tense and that new incidents could not be ruled out.

A fire broke out at the migrant centre in Velika Kladusa last weekend, with one of the accommodation facilities completely burning down.

The largest number of migrants who arrive in Bosnia and Herzegovina are staying in the areas of Velika Kladusa and Bihac in the country’s northwest, close to the border with Croatia.

According to information provided by security agencies, more than 7,000 migrants have entered Bosnia and Herzegovina since the start of the year.
