The Vecernji List daily said on Tuesday that a bill of amendments to the law on national holidays would envisage a new one, a memorial day for all Homeland War victims which would be observed on November 18, the day the eastern town of Vukovar fell in the 1991-95 war.

The memorial day would be observed in Vukovar at the request of veterans’ associations and those participating in drafting a law on Vukovar as a place of special respect, the paper said.

It is already known that Statehood Day will be observed again on May 30, as it was observed in the first ten years of the multiparty system in Croatia. Since 2001, it is observed on June 25, the day in 1991 when parliament adopted the decision on Croatia’s independence and sovereignty.

Sources close to the Public Administration Ministry say there have been objections in business circles to the introduction of yet another non-working day, but add that a memorial day would “not have the required impact” unless it was made a bank holiday, Vecernji List said.
