The European Union and Montenegro on Monday signed an agreement on cooperation with the EU border agency Frontex, which involves training and joint patrols with the country's border police.

This is the second such agreement signed with Western Balkan countries. The first one was signed with Albania in October 2018, and similar agreements were initialed with North Macedonia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The agreement will enable Frontex to assist Montenegro in border management and it will enable joint operations and deployment of Frontex members in the areas of Montenegro that border with the EU. Before such operations are undertaken, Montenegro must give its consent.

The agreement was signed by the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, Maria Ohisalo, the Minister of the Interior of the EU chair Finland, and Montenegrin Minister of the Interior Mevludin Nuhodzic.
