Health Minister Milan Kujundzic refused to step down on Monday amid controversies raised by the media over the source of his wealth, saying he would leave it to the Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, to decide whether to relieve him or not.

The Telegram news portal reported last week that Kujundzic had undervalued his home and other properties around the country in his declaration of assets, which is required by law for high-ranking office holders. Other irregularities were also reported in the media.

Kujundzic, who attended Monday’s press conference accompanied by his lawyer, said that the amounts listed in the declaration were a mistake on his part, and apologised. However, he also described the controversies and growing calls for his resignation as “attacks orchestrated by interest groups.”

Also last week, four men harassed a female reporter who was investigating one of Kujundzic’s properties near the town of Imotski in southern Croatia. The incident, caught on camera and published, caused public outrage.

Kujundzic later condemned the attack, but refused to resign, adding however this would be his last term as Health Minister.

A trained physician, Kujundzic has long been involved in conservative politics, before becoming Health Minister in Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic’s cabinet in October 2016.
