Croatia confirms 9th coronavirus case

One more case of coronavirus infection was confirmed on Tuesday morning, the ninth such case which tested positive for the disease over the last seven days. The latest case was discovered in the northern town of Varazdin, in a truck driver who had recently visited northern Italy to pick up cargo.

The country’s Health Minister, Vili Beros, told reporters on Tuesday that in spite of the infection, the man is not showing any symptoms of the disease.

This is the ninth case discovered in Croatia so far. Eight other people have been put into quarantine in the cities of Zagreb and Rijeka, in two separate clusters of patients who had been in close contact with the first two cases – a man from Rijeka who recently spent time in Parma, Italy, and a younger man from Zagreb who travelled to Milan two weeks ago.

All patients identified so far are exhibiting only mild to none symptoms of the disease, and all are expected to recover.

As of Monday, around 2,400 Croatians who have recently returned to the country from abroad have been told to stay at home and report to health authorities twice a day, and some 230 suspected cases have been tested at the Fran Mihaljevic Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Zagreb.

The novel coronavirus, which was first detected in China’s Huabei province in December, has now spread globally, with more than 91,000 confirmed cases around the world as of Tuesday, including some 3,100 deaths.

In Europe, confirmed cases were discovered in at least two dozen countries. The worst affected European country by far is Italy, which reported more than 2,000 cases so far, including 52 deaths.

The United States reported more than 100 infections in six states as of Tuesday, includig six deaths.
