Slovenian health authorities confirmed a second case of coronavirus infection on Thursday afternoon, in a person who had been in contact with the man who was identified as the country's first case only a day before.
The original patient was a man who flew from Morocco to Venice on Saturday, February 29, and then continued by van to Slovenia’s capital Ljubljana. He was sent to the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in the capital of Ljubljana, where he has been out in quarantine on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Slovenian authorities called on anyone who might have travelled along with him to be vigilant about their health and contact their physicians in case any symptoms occur.
Also on Thursday, Bosnia reported its first two cases in the city of Banja Luka, in a man who had recently returned from work in Italy, and his young son son. Authorities closed the son’s elementary school in Banja Luka for the rest of the week.
In Croatia, ten cases have been confirmed so far, all of them in people who had been to Italy or had been in close contact with people who have. All of them have exhibited only light or mild symptoms, and are expected to recover.
Italy is still Europe’s worst-affected country by far, with more than 3,000 cases confirmed and the death toll rising to 107 on Thursday.
In an attempt to contain the disease, Italian government decided to shut down all schools and universities for at least the following ten days. Cinemas, theatres, and museums are also all closed, while football matches will be played according to schedule, albeit behind closed doors.
As of Thursday, some 96,000 cases have been reported in more than 80 countries worldwide, including 3,000 deaths, the vast majority of them in mainland China, where the outbreak started in December.
