According to the Ministry of Civil Affairs, 37,228 people have renounced their Bosnian passports between 2011 and end of September this year.

Since the beginning of 2020, 2,198 people gave up their Bosnian citizenship.

The number of people who have turned in their Bosnian passports has been growing yearly until 2017 when it peaked at 4,498.

There were slight decreases in 2018 and 2019, and the figures for 2020 so far show a somewhat more dramatic decrease.

Only in the period between 2015 and 2018, the government collected more than 9,7 million Bosnian Marks in administrative fees related to the procedure.

According to the ‘Sustainability of Emigration from Bosnia and Herzegovina’ study, conducted by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, some of the main reasons for such a massive emigration are lack of employment, corruption and nepotism, poor public services, seeking a better future for families and children, a better quality of life in abroad, fear of uncertainty.
