Croatian MEP Ivan Vilibor Sincic unloaded a tonne of salt outside the Economy Ministry on Friday to say that Croatia, a maritime country, imported 90% of salt even though it can produce it.

“We are here today to warn the public and call out the minister of the economy and all former ministers, the ruling HDZ, the fake opposition SDP, that Croatia, as a maritime country with ideal conditions for producing salt, imports 90% of its salt,” he told the press after the performance.

Sincic staged a similar performance in early September, unloading watermelons outside Government House to warn about the poor status of Croatian farmers because imports have flooded the market.

Coric: It would be useful if Human Shield made constructive proposals

Commenting on today’s performance, Economy Minister Tomislav Coric said it would be useful is Sincic and his Human Shield party made constructive proposals both at the European and Croatian levels.

Coric said it was not correct that Croatia imported 90% of salt. “Croatia is import-dependent. However, domestic production is higher than that amount,” he said, underlining the importance of increasing Croatia’s self-sufficiency, notably in food production.

As for Sincic’s statement that Coric was the worst minister to date, he said it was up to the public and experts to assess how much was done in the past few years, notably in environmental protection and energy.
