A policeman who sustained gunshot wounds in a shooting in Zagreb's St. Mark's Square on Monday morning, has undergone several hours of surgery and is not in a life-threatening condition and his vital functions have stabilised, the director of the Sisters of Mercy Hospital said on Monday afternoon.

A wounded nerve, vein, tendon and bones in his left arm have been reconstructed. The policeman is stable and no longer in a life-threatening condition, the hospital’s director Mario Zovak told the press after the operation of the 31-year-old police officer was over.

Zovak said that he was satisfied with the course and results of today’s surgery.

We hope that he will soon undergo rehabilitation therapy and that he will recover and be to work again as a police officer.

Zovak added that one more surgery is planned in a few weeks’ time, which will depend on the course of recovery following today’s surgery.

The 31-old police officer was wounded in a shooting when a 22-year-old man opened fire at security guards outside the buildings housing the government and the parliament in St. Mark’s Square. Soon after the shooting, the attacker committed suicide in a nearby street.

According to police information, the attacker, who was later identified as Danijel Bazuk, does not have criminal record.

Before the incident, Bezuk, posted a message on Facebook before committing suicide which said “No more deceit and impunity for those who trample on human value.”
