Defence Minister Mario Banozic said on Friday that the attack of 22-year-old Danijel Bezuk on Government House had elements of an organised act, assessing that the incident was not due to the government's work but the social situation in the country.
“(The incident) is definitely not due to the work of an individual government member, the government or the prime minister, as those hiding behind various political parties or movements want to depict. It is a result of the social situation in the country, a kind of sensitivity,” Banozic told reporters in Vukovar.
He said that judging by the results of the investigation so far, there were elements of an organised act. Asked if he believed that PM Andrej Plenkovic was the target, he said, “It is well-known who the main person in the building is.”
The minister believes that St Mark’s Square should remain open to the public after the attack, but that certain security arrangements had to be introduced.
“We have been open so far, showing members of the public that they are welcome, but I think that has been abused,” Banozic said, adding that in most towns where state institutions are located in squares, a special regime is in force.
He noted that more order was necessary, notably with regard to who can move freely outside the entrance to the government building.
Banozic said that the army was willing to support civil institutions with organisation and other things in the fight against coronavirus, from air transport to logistics, and that it had been doing so from the very start.
