Of 288,991 registered businesses in Croatia, 169,637 or 58.7% were active in September, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (DZS).
Most of these were trade companies. There were 214,161 such companies registered in September and 135,024 or 63% of them were active.
There were also 71,271 institutions, associations and organisations, of which 33,752 or 47.4% were active, and 3,559 co-operatives, of which 861 were active. There were also 87,215 businesses in the trades and crafts and freelance sector operating in September.
Of the total number of 169,637 active businesses, 72,857 or 42.9% did not have any employees; 80,007 or 47.2% had between 1 and 9 employees; 12,818 or 7.6% had between 10 and 49 employees; and 3,350 or 2% had between 50 and 249 employees. Only 340 businesses or 0.4% had more than 250 employees.
More than half of registered and active businesses operated in four sectors – wholesale and retail trade and repairs of motor vehicles and motorcycles (18.2% of registered businesses and 16.9% of active ones), manufacturing (7.8%, 8.7%), professional, scientific and technical activities (10.2%, 12.5%), and other services (16.9% of registered businesses and 13.4% of active ones).
A total of 78.7% of active businesses were privately owned, 0.8% were state-owned, 0.5% were in mixed ownership, 0.5% were cooperatives, while the ownership of 19.5% of businesses was not tracked.
A total of 156,685 companies were registered as limited liability companies and 97,506 of them were active in September. There were also 54,638 simple limited liability companies, of which 35,926 were active, according to the DZS report.
