Croatia's coronavirus czar, Krunoslav Capak, said on Friday that last week saw a 42 percent drop in new coronavirus cases, and called on people to get vaccinated, state agency Hina reported.

Speaking at a press conference of the national Covid-19 task force, Capak said there were 814 new infections from Monday through Friday last week, and only 468 this week.

The team described the current epidemiological situation as "favorable" and that Croatia now ranked 12th in the EU in terms of 14-day incidence per 100,000 population.

Health Minister, Vili Beros, said Croatians who are maybe planning to get vaccinated in the autumn are "making a wrong calculation."

"Vaccination now, at the start of the summer, prevents a new virus wave... At the moment we know the vaccine protects for at least eight months, and most probably even longer than that," Beros said.
