SV Golden Horizon, a steel-hulled five-masted barque rigged tall ship, which is intended to be used as a cruise ship, left the Brodosplit shipyard on Wednesday, the Split-based dock reported on Wednesday afternoon.
The Brodosplit shipyard said that the vessel can accommodate up to 272 passengers and will provide the service for UK-based Tradewind Voyages.
“As far as itineraries are concerned, it is designed for voyages according to where the wind and sea currents take it,” the company said.
Reportedly the largest sailing ship ever built, SV Golden Horizon was designed by the acclaimed Polish naval arhitect Zygmunt Choren. The ship is 162 meters long and 18.5 meters wide. It has five masts with 36 cross sails with a total area of 6,347 square meters. The vessel’s carrying capacity is 2,000 tons.
Originally named Flying Clipper and built on a €70 million order for the Swedish company Star Clippers Ltd. the ship was never delivered to the original buyer over contract dispute which left the clipper in Brodosplit’s ownership. The ship was later chartered by Suffolk-based Tradewind Voyages and renamed Golden Horizon.
