Austria's capital Vienna topped the most liveable cities index in the 2018 Mercer Quality of Living City Survey for the ninth year in a row, with Zagreb coming in 98th.
The 20th edition of Mercer’s annual survey compared quality of life in 231 cities worldwide, using some 40 different factors, including things like political stability, infrastructure, health care, education, crime rates, culture, state of the environment, and so on.
In this year’s report the top ten list was dominated by European cities, with Germany’s Munich (4th), Dusseldorf (6th), and Frankfurt (7th), Switzerland’s Zurich (2nd), Geneva (8th), and Basel (10th), and Denmark’s Copenhagen (9th) all making the selection. The only non-European cities ranked inside the top ten are New Zealand’s Auckland (3rd) and Canada’s Vancouver (5th).
Croatian capital Zagreb ranked 98th, thanks to a 15 percent higher score compared to the previous year. Elsewhere in the region, Slovenia’s Ljubljana ranked 75th, Serbia’s Belgrade came in 139th, and Bosnia’s Sarajevo was 159th.
The bottom of the list was taken by the Iraqi capital Baghdad at 231th place, preceded by Bangui in the Central African Republic at 230th, Sana’a at 229th and Haiti’s Port-au-Prince at 228th place.
