Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Wednesday received the Director General of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Noel Curran, the press release from the government said.

EBU, the world’s leading alliance of public media organisations, has members in 56 countries in Europe and beyond.

Curran informed the Prime Minister of the trends in the audiovisual industry in Europe and the world, and of the challenges the sector is facing during digital transformation.

EBU is ready to actively participate in the preparation of Croatia’s chairmanship of the European Union in 2020 with regard to audiovisual sector policies, which Culture Minister Nina Obuljen-Korzinek is actively working on, he said.

It is important for public broadcasters to retain their influence and reach all audiences, particularly young people, who grow up with digital platforms readily available to them, said Plenkovic.

He added it was important for public broadcasters to prepare for digital challenges, and expressed support for the efforts of EBU and similar organisations who fight against fake news, because of the specific role of public broadcasters, the press release said.
