Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic commented on the Croatian national team's success in 2018 World Cup for CNN on Thursday.

Prime Minister Plenkovic told CNN that the national football team’s making it to the World Cup finals to play France was a historic event for Croatian sports.

“The Croatian team has been playing very well throughout the tournament. They have demonstrated that it is not by chance that our main players are actually currently playing in top European football clubs, in the best leagues. And I think they have showed a lot of resilience, after a not-so-convincing first half, but then they have mastered the game completely in the second half and in in the extra time,” Plenkovic said, referring to the semi-final match against England which Croatia won 2-1 in extra time.

“Of course, we were all cheering given the fact that this was a historic event for Croatian sports, for Croatian football. Only 20 years have passed since our last semi-final in France, and repeating it already now, you can imagine, you can imagine that going through to the finals has brought a sort of delirious atmosphere in Croatia,” Plenkovic told CNN.

His statement was part of a report on the football frenzy in Croatia, caused by the national team’s triumph that has taken them to the World Cup finals in Russia.
