One of today’s most acclaimed countertenors, German Andreas Scholl, will perform on Wednesday in the Rector’s Palace Atrium in the city of Dubrovnik, as part of 69th edition of Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

In a concert titled Small Gifts of Heaven, Scholl will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, and Georg Friedrich Händel with the German Ensemble 1700, which focuses on European chamber music from the 17th and 18th centuries.

“I heard a lot about Dubrovnik and the Summer Festival, but I never had the opportunity to sing there. I am very happy to have my debut in this beautiful city this summer,” Scholl said.

Scholl has performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra from Berlin, New York, and Boston, as well as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from Amsterdam. This year, he was invited to Oxford University as visiting professor of voice and classical music.

Ensemble 1700, established in 2002, combines musicology and performance practice with technical expertise to offer lively concert performances, enthusiastically received in most renowned European music centres, such as the Konzerthaus in Vienna, Tonhalle in Zurich, or Philharmonie in Koeln. It is directed by its founder, Dorothee Oberlinger, a renowned flautist.

“I was very fortunate to meet Dorothee a few years ago. Apart from being the world’s leading flautist, she is a great role model for her orchestra. The musical skill that she, her orchestra, and I share reaches telepathic levels,” Scholl said of Oberlinger.
