Lawmakers of five left Slovenian parties on Wednesday nominated Marjan Sarec, a comedian-turned-politician, for the country's Prime Minister-Designate. His nomination is likely to pull the country out of a political deadlock since the June 3 early parliamentary elections with no outright winner.
Sarec, who has served two terms as mayor of the northern town of Kamnik, has managed to collect signatures of 43 MPs in the 90-seat parliament.
The signatures for Sarec's nomination were given by MPs from his party - the List of Marjan Sarec (LMS) - as well as deputies from other centre-left and centrist parties, including the Social Democrats led by Dejan Zidan, the Party of the Modern Centre led by the outgoing PM Miro Cerar, the Party of Alenka Bratusek (SAB) and the Democratic Party of Pensioners (DESUS) led by Karl Erjavec.
The conservative Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) led by Janez Jansa which won the highest number of seats - 25 - failed to find a coalition partner to form a new government.
Although Sarec is still short by three seats of securing majority in parliament, the leftist Levica (L) party, which has 9 MPs, has promised to support his cabinet during a secret ballot.
