The Croatian Sovereignists are satisfied with the result achieved in the May 26 election for the European Parliament and consider it "just a brief flash" to be followed soon by "a political storm" and even greater voter support in the next parliamentary election.
Hrvoje Zekanovic, member of parliament and leader of the HRAST party, which is part of the Croatian Sovereignists, told reporters on Friday that the Croatian Sovereignists had become the third political force in the country, with polls showing an increase of close to two percent in their approval ratings.
“I expect us to enjoy great voter support in the coming period, this is the beginning. The European elections were just a flash, and it will soon be followed by a political storm,” Zekanovic told a news conference thanking those voters who supported the Croatian Sovereignists.
Zekanovic tells Stier to leave Plenkovic
Zekanovic dismissed the possibility of forming a coalition with the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) of Andrej Plenkovic for the next parliamentary election, advising HDZ MP Davor Ivo Stier to leave Plenkovic.
“You cannot vote for Plenkovic’s government and be a Christian Democrat at the same time,” said Zekanovic, stressing that Plenkovic’s policy was unacceptable to the Croatian Sovereignists.
“The policy pursued by Andrej Plenkovic is our antipode and we fight against it,” he said.
Kristina Pavlovic of the civil initiative “The Truth about the Istanbul Convention” said that the best trait of the Croatian Sovereignists and the key to their success in the Sunday elections was that they listened to the people.
Stier used to be foreign minister in the Plenkovic cabinet but resigned due to his disagreement with the ratification of the Istanbul convention. Upon his resignation, he reactivated his term as an HDZ member of parliament in mid-2017.
