The European Union is opposed to restrictive measures which the US administration of President Donald Trump has imposed on Cuba, European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development Neven Mimica said at a business forum in Cuba on Friday.

Mimica said that bilateral cooperation between Cuba and the EU exceeded EUR 100 million this year, adding that the EU would direct an additional EUR 4 million at modernising the fragile Cuban economy to attract foreign investment there, according to Reuters and EFE news agencies.

We are concerned about the negative impact of the stepped-up US embargo and recent travel restrictions on the Cuban economy and lives of Cubans, Mimica said in a statement.

The EU is the largest foreign investor in Cuba and their cooperation includes agriculture, renewable energy, climate change and culture, the forum was told.

Mimica said the EU strongly condemned the unilateral extraterritorial measures relating to Cuba, referring to the 1996 Helms-Burton Act which Trump activated in May, increasing the pressure on the policies of Cuba and Venezuela.
