The European football association (UEFA) said on Tuesday that it had been informed that the tank in front of the Red Star Belgrade stadium did not carry any political connotation, Radio Free Europe reported.

The Soviet-made T-55 main battle tank, with all armaments removed and cannon barrel welded, was deployed outside the northern stands of the Rajko Mitic stadium where Red Star supporters traditionally sit. Supporter clubs claimed to have bought the tank as army surplus.

Red Start supporter groups were given permission by the authorities to place the tank with their club colors outside the stadium, something they have been asking to do for several years, UEFA said and added that the deployment of the tank has nothing to do with the Champions League match between Red Star and the Swiss Young Boys.
