School unions are dissatisfied with the prime minister's proposal of a 6.12% base pay rise for public servants next year so the strike in schools is continuing, Branimir Mihalinec of the Independent Union of High School Employees said on Wednesday.

Nothing the prime minister said today resolves the problems because of which teachers have been striking for five days now, he told a news conference after PM Andrej Plenkovic announced that the government would make that offer.

The school unions seek an increase of the job complexity index for teachers by 6.11% on average, which is not resolved by raising the base pay, Mihalinec said.

Plenkovic said the government was willing to resolve the issue of job complexity indices but only after a detailed expert analysis that would precisely determine the real complexity of all jobs.

Mihalinec said this was the first time that a prime minister was offering unions a base pay rise in parliament and completely ignoring the fact that negotiations on that were under way with unions.

Equally raising the base pay for everyone does not resolve the lagging behind of the job complexity index in education and further increases the difference between those employed in education and other public servants, which is unacceptable for the school unions, Mihalinec said.
