In the last 24 hours, there has been a record single-day number of 396 new cases of coronavirus in Split-Dalmatia County, and the head of the university hospital centre in Split, Julije Mestrovic, said on Wednesday that the situation in the institution was under control.

“We have braced ourselves for an increase of admitted patients,” Mestrovic said.

Currently there are 90 COVID patients in the hospital, and nine of them are patients who have developed serious symptoms an have been placed on ventilators.

“We are prepared for these situations, and we have ensured the necessary number of beds, equipment and staff. All our patients are cared for and all the necessary medications are administered to them,” he said.

He added that currently 35-40 staffers were self-isolating, and underscored that all of them had caught the virus outside the hospital.

The hospital will manage to cope with the current situation, he said, reiterating that all the patients would be cared for in the best way.
