Croatian umbrella medical associations on Wednesday expressed their concern over the contents of a resolution regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights in the EU, which mentions conscientious objection in medicine.

The Croatian Medical Chamber, the Croatian Medical Association, and the Croatian Medical Union sent a statement to the media in which they object to attempts to abolish, reinterpret, or criminalise conscientious objection, as noted in the proposed resolution.

The organisations insist that the arguments in support of the proposal are inappropriate and conscientious objection in Croatia has not deprived women of healthcare with regard to sexual and reproductive health in such a way that it would endanger their lives, as noted in the proposed resolution and in a report on the situation with sexual and reproductive rights in the EU in the context of women’s health, put forward by the rapporteur for the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, Croatian MEP Predrag Fred Matic.

Conscientious objection is guaranteed in many supra-national and international legal sources, such as the General Declaration on Human Rights, the European Convention on Human Rights, and Fundamental Freedoms, the International Pact on Civic and Political Rights, and the EU Charter on Fundamental Rights, they said.
