Slovenia on Wednesday confirmed a record 3,456 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, the largest single-day case count since the beginning of the epidemic.
The previous record daily count was 3,428, reported on 5 January this year.
Despite the surge in new cases and hospitalizations, the government is not considering a 10-day total lockdown for now, even though this has been recommended by local experts, Slovenian media reported. “The matter will be discussed at a cabinet meeting on Thursday,” Croatia’s state agency Hina said.
Instead of a lockdown, the government is more likely to decide on other, less rigorous measures, such as stricter checks of Covid passes, shortening the opening hours of bars and restaurants, working from home for public sector workers, and restricting public gatherings, state television said.
The head of the National Public Health Institute (NIJZ), Milan Krek, said on Tuesday that the current wave of the epidemic was expected to peak in mid-November. According to the latest NIJZ data, out of 7,722 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, 3,456 returned positive, which is a test positivity rate of 44.7 percent.
The seven-day average of daily new cases is now 2,234, while the 14-day incidence rate is 1,393 cases per 100,000 people.
Currently, 670 infected people are receiving hospital treatment and 159 of them are in intensive care. The Covid-19 vaccination rate is growing slowly and has now reached 53 percent of Slovenia’s total population of 2.1 million.
