Croatia was elected a member of the United Nation's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2022-24 period, the Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Ministry reported on Tuesday in a press release carried by state agency Hina.
The UN Charter established ECOSOC in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations. ECOSOC consists of 54 member countries.
The Economic and Social Council is the UN’s body for dealing with the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.
“It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals. It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits,” Hina said, citing the United Nations.
Croatia was a member of this body for the first time in 2000-02.
