Slovenia’s epidemiological situation is indicating that the fifth wave of the Covid pandemic shows signs of waning.

The daily number of new cases is on the decline and in the past seven days, the incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants is 12,657 new cases, while the the 14-day incidence rate per one hundred thousand population is 8,907.

The situation in hospitals appears to be stable and there are currently 780 hospitalized Covid patients, 134 of whom are in intensive care while another 15 people died in the past 24 hours bringing the death toll to 5,990 of the country’s population of 2.1 million people. In January 2021 the Covid-related death toll had already exceeded 3,000, which was why Slovenia ranked third in the world in terms of the highest death rates.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic in Slovenia, a total of 880,020 cases have been registered and that 330,000 of those have been registered since the beginning of this year.

The situation is still not good even though Slovenia has passed the peak of the fifth wave of the epidemic, the director of the Institute for Public Health, Milan Krek said on Monday, calling for immunization of the population to help Slovenia brace for possible new waves of the pandemic.

A recent survey presented on Slovenian Television indicates that 52.6% of the population want anti-epidemic measures to be lifted and life to get back to normal, however, epidemiologists warn that it is still too early to ease all the restrictions unless the number of hospitalized Covid patients drops markedly.
