A few moderate and weaker earthquakes rocked the area of the town of Petrinja during the night and early on Tuesday morning, after the areas of Petrinja and the city of Sisak were hit by a quake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale on Monday morning, with seismologist Kresimir Kuk saying that subsequent tremors were normal.

The first of the two latest earthquakes happened at 1.19 a.m., measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale and with an epicentre near Petrinja, while the other occurred at 7.05 a.m. and measured 2.5 on the Richter scale. It was followed by several weaker tremors.

Seismologist Kresimir Kuk said in an interview with Croatian public radio on Tuesday morning that the subsequent tremors were normal.

No direct link with March earthquake that hit Zagreb

He stressed that there was no direct link between the Zagreb earthquake of March 22 and Monday’s earthquake in the areas of Sisak and Petrinja, southeast of Zagreb, because those were two different epicentral areas.

Since March, there have been 2,400 tremors in Zagreb, he said.

“Yesterday’s quake was weaker than the Zagreb earthquake so subsequent quakes are expected to end a little sooner,” Kuk said.
