Greenpeace activists on Monday staged a protest action on the site of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Omisalj on the island of Krk, in which they sprayed the words Climate Killer on the side of an offshore floating tanker used to store gas.. Pročitaj više

The group’s press release said that the protest, organized by Greenpeace activists from central and eastern European countries, was “peaceful.”

The group tweeted that this was “a call to EU leaders to move away from fossil gas.”

Petra Andric of Greenpeace CEE said that they are urging the Croatian government to “cease implementing further projects and investments in gas and other fossil fuel infrastructure” and redirect those funds into renewables, primarily into solar energy resources.

The protest in Omisalj was the last in a string of events organized by Greenpeace during the visit of the environmentalist organization’s ship, Arctic Sunrise, to Croatian waters over the past several days.

On Saturday, Greenpeace activists held a news conference in the northern Adriatic port of Rijeka, warning that the gas platform Ivana D – operated by the national oil firm Ina and which sank a year ago in a storm – was still lying on the Adriatic seabed.

Over the weekend, Greenpeace members also collected signatures to launch a petition via the European Citizens’ Initiative seeking an EU-wide ban on advertising fossil fuels and all related sponsorships.

The initiative is a EU mechanism which allows EU citizens to propose new legislation via a petition, provided that the petition gets at least one million signatures by nationals from at least seven different EU countries.
