The WiFi4EU programme will launch its first call for projects in mid May, with each municipality selected receiving a 15,000 euros voucher to be spent on building Wi-Fi infrastructure. The first batch consists of 1,000 such vouchers, and each country would get a minimum of 15 vouchers, HRT reported on Wednesday (March 21).
The initiative, announced by EC President Jean-Claude Juncker in 2016, aims to cover public spaces in every European village or city with free Wi-Fi access. In the 2014-2020 EU budget, some 120 million euros have been earmarked for installating free Wi-Fi services in 8,000 municipalities in all EU member countries, Norway and Iceland.
