EU’s Foreign and Security policy chief Federica Mogherini said on Thursday that Montenegro’s foreign policy “coincided a hundred percent” with the policy of the block.

She added that “it is extremely important in these turbulent times.”

Mogherini, who is on a brief tour of the Western Balkans ahead of the EU Summit on Western Balkans scheduled for May 17 in Sofia, said Montenegro had made an “encouraging progress in the reforms in public services and economy” in general.

She met with the newly elected president of the coastal republic, Milo Djukanovic, and Montenegro’s Prime Minister, Dusko Markovic, in the country’s Adriatic town of Tivat where she arrived after visiting the Macedonian capital, Skopje, on Wednesday.

“We expect progress in other areas as well. Further work on the rule of law and the freedom of media is necessary,” Mogherini told a joint news conference with Markovic.

Montenegro’s PM told reporters that “Montenegro is advancing towards the EU, but we are aware of all the deficiencies and weaknesses.”
