The Social Democratic Party (SDP) on Saturday morning held a session to discuss the current crisis hitting this biggest Opposition party, which has culminated with a letter recently signed by 90 dissatisfied members who want the SDP leader Davor Bernardic to step down for the benefit of the party.

Reporters were not allowed to be present at the start of today’s meeting, however, they got information from some of the party officials that in his keynote speech, Bernardic said that he had no illusion that “after this (the letter) the situation can change for the better”.

According to the same source, Bernardic called on SDP members to follow the example of the Croatian national football team and be united, however, he did not offer a model for the exit the crisis.

Bernardic criticised some of those disgruntled members for double standards and hypocrisy referring to their behaviour in the past he deems to be contrary to Social Democratic values.

After Bernardic’s speech, one of the members of the Main Committee, Tomislav Zrinski, asked that all party officials that harshly criticised the party leadership be suspended for two years, however this proposal was met with disapproval.
