Slovenian police on Tuesday launched a special team to deal with illegal migrations. The team currently consists of 23 police officers and the group will increase as it is expected to eventually have a total of 52 members, Croatian state agency Hina reported.
Minister of the Interior, Ales Hojs, and Police Director, Anton Olaj, said the team would be based in Brezice because the number of illegal border crossings was the highest in that area, noting that not enough had been done in combating illegal migrations so far.
“The number of illegal migrants found in Slovenia and along the so-called Balkan route remains high. We are responding pro-actively, by planning border protection measures and have therefore introduced numerous organizational, legal and operational measures,” Olaj said.
The police team in charge of fighting illegal migrations will be active along the border with Croatia and in the country’s interior, and in addition to illegal migrations, it will also fight against the smuggling of weapons and ammunition and stolen vehicles.
In its work the team will be using opto-electronic systems and electronic and fiber optic devices.
