Croatia is prepared to help Turkey in the fight against disastrous wildfires that are ravaging the country, claiming the lives of eight people so far, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Sunday.

“Our condolences to the victims’ families, the Turkish people and President (Recep Tayyip) Erdogan on the disastrous wildfires in your country,” Plenkovic said in a Twitter post Sunday.

He said that Croatia would help by sending Canadair planes to Turkey through the European Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC).

The number of people killed in wildfires on Turkey’s southern coast on Sunday rose to eight. Firefighters have been trying for five days to contain fires that still threaten holiday resorts.

In his post, Plenkovic also noted that Croatia appreciated the help sent by Turkey after a disastrous earthquake that struck the central Croatian areas surrounding the towns of Petrinja and Sisak on December 29.
