Eight former members of the Bosnian Serb army were arrested on Thursday on the suspicion of involvement in the killing of at least 100 Bosniaks in the area of eastern Herzegovina, the Bosnia and Herzegovina prosecutors said on Thursday.

All of the suspects, of whom some held command posts in the army, are charged with war crimes against civilians.

They are suspected of direct involvement in the killing of Bosniak civilians in the area of Nevesinje, including dozens of women as well as a larger number of children, the youngest victim being only 15 days old.

Almost all members of seven Bosniak families were killed. So far, the remains of 49 victims have been found while the search for the remains of 47 victims continues. Bosnian Serb paramilitary units killed more than 300 local Bosniaks and 12 Croats during a mass ethnic cleansing campaign in the summer of 1992, including at least 26 children. The victims’ bodies were thrown mostly into karst pits.

The wartime police chief of Nevesinje, Krsto Savic, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for war crimes.
