The fact that the Ministry of Social Policy is integrated with the Ministry of Labour does not affect the functioning of the social care system, Minister of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy Josip Aladrovic said on Wednesday, dismissing criticisms from President Zoran Milanovic.
“We can talk about the need for an urgent intervention in the legislative framework as well as in the institutional and non-institutional framework. However, to correlate the Nova Gradiška case and the merger of the ministries can be nothing but political populism,” Aladrović said in a Croatian Radio programme.

President Zoran Milanovic said on Tuesday that the death of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl from Nova Gradiska, caused by domestic violence, required an immediate intervention, severely criticizing the integration of the social policy department into the present “mega-ministry”.
“If you look at the social policies over the past years, you can see that there was a lot of meandering and that this segment was included in different combinations. Now we have decided to reduce the number of ministries and the ministry that I lead comprises labour, pension system, family and social policy. This has its advantages and disadvantages. Would this case have been prevented had this ministry been organized differently? I’m quite certain that it wouldn’t. The scope of the ministry’s work is certainly not directly correlated with this case and I would not trivialise it in a politically populist manner,” Aladrovic said.
Speaking of the Nova Gradiska case, he said that the girl’s death could have been prevented and that the social care system needed reorganizing to reduce the possibility of such cases happening in the future to a minimum.
“In any case, the responsibility is individual. However, it also rests with all of us who are in charge of this system and who are involved in it on a day-to-day basis,” Aladrovic said. He added that such cases could never be totally prevented, and that all social workers should not be stigmatized for that.
