The Central State Reconstruction and Housing Office said on Tuesday that it has prepared adequate winter accommodation for everyone living in containers since the Banovina region earthquake of 29 December 2020.

State secretary Gordan Hanzek said the state had provided accommodation in 2,200 containers since the tremor and that those affected had been given another 1,000 mobile units by private donors.

Petrinja Mayor Magdalena Komes said many of the town’s residents are living in containers and the coming winter has made the situation worse.

“We are calling on people almost every day, who are not in adequate premises and conditions, and who cannot stay in those containers during the winter, to contact the Central State Office so that the state can find them adequate accommodation for this time of year,” she added.

Hanzek said that in cooperation with local government units, the Central State Office had contacted all earthquake victims living in containers to find out what people who do not feel safe in containers need during the winter.

The Central State Office said it has prepared them better, warmer and safer accommodation for the winter months.

To date 7,858 applications have been submitted for reconstruction which does not involve seismic retrofitting, 1,410 contractors have been hired and 800 houses completed.
